Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
- Nothing Gold Can Stay, Robert Frost
Ever since I was little I loved reading anything and everything. So when asked to chose a poem I went through all of my old books and found a poem that had always touched me, Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost.
This piece of literature brings up many emotions and in only eight lines, which to me is a masterpiece. I love everything about this poem. The nature symbolism, the pictures it evokes, the way it rhymes -all of this gives the poem a child like quality which makes me adore this piece of literature even more. What I love the most about the poem is that it has two meanings. This poem is not only about youth and innocence but also about how nothing good lasts forever.
Like seasons in nature, people change physically and mentally, which is what this poem is about. Gold in the poem represents youth and innocence. As we get older and face the world, our innocence gets harder to hold on to. Until one day we wake up and realize that we are much older and that life has taken a toll on our innocence.
The other meaning is that nothing good lasts forever. Life will not always be full of happiness; it will also have sorrow and pain. We must learn how to live with both in order to a balanced life.
It is a sad but beautifully composed poem and the messages are powerful and deep but written in a simple and child-like way that I will always remember
