This is a narrative academy leader about counting a person trying to fall asleep by counting sheep. I stretched the boundaries a bit on this one and decided to give it an introduction before the countdown. I also thought that a music box background would be more fitting instead of a sheep noise each time the sheep would jump. This lullaby also syncs to each sheep jumping creating a dreamy, childish feel to the academy leader.

Imagine waking up in a field not knowing how or why you ended up there. What you do remember is all scrambled and coded in a dream. Awaken is a narrative about a boy awakening from an unconscious state. The ‘score’ of this short film, which was created in the last exercise, is what the boy is hearing while he is drifting back to reality. The dream, which are all the stop motion clips, are a mix of memory and his subconscious (which is the boy with the white shirt in the chair) warning him that he is in danger. The danger (which is the man in black) can be interpreted in many ways. It could be the inner conflict of good and evil or the dangers that lurk all around us or possibly a memory of the person who had taken him….

This brings me to the topic of dreams. Dreams are a complex thing. They are always full of complex and confusing messages that often repeat, change and grow. The do not always flow like a film. They sometimes can seem like you are frozen in time. They sometimes only show you flashes of images and then blackness. With this short film I wanted to incorporate all of this to create a sense of surrealism and wonder.

So, What is the message? and what exactly does the man in black mean? That’s for you to figure out…

My Inspirations

My first inspiration comes from the infamous se7en title sequence by Kyle Cooper. The overlaying of images and photos create an abstract and interesting compositions through out the sequence. Cooper’s use of colour is also something I would like to test out.

My Inspiration

This next one is entitled ballet mecanique by the American composer George Antheil and the filmmaker/artist Fernand Léger. I first saw this piece in my film class while we were discussing surrealism and other experimental movements in film. The original score to this piece was actually created before the film was made, much like this project. I enjoy how they use random objects that sync up with the sound. It feels like your watching someones dream - random, repetitive, and scattered

Part B - Sound Essay

This was our final experiment. We finally had the composition we wanted and the time to do it. We choose this scenery because we liked how the shadow slowly enveloped the wall and stair case. It sort of reminded us of a sundial.

THE RING

My first exercise with vinh. We went into Vari Hall and climbed to the 3rd floor. We noticed the beautiful composition and decided to set up and shoot. We soon realized that the sunlight from the windows around the ceiling made a ring on the floor that slowly started to move as time went on. We wanted to go back re-shoot to go back and make the final product smoother but we never got the chance.

Tablecloth Design Concept of the Day: “Underfull Tablecloth” by Kristine Bjaadal.

At first glance the tablecloth appears to be a traditional white floral damask, but it contains the most wonderful secret; a hidden pattern that first shows when wet. Sooner or later someone is bound to spill, but where this person usually feels clumsy and embarrassed, he will now feel fortunate. An everyday negative situation is turned into a positive experience.

Demo video here. Kristine is reportedly in the process of examining the possibility of mass production.
